impossible flan or cake/flan o pastel imposible

this dessert is a perfect combination of chocolate cake and flan. in case you have a favorite chocolate cake recipe, you can definitely use that one as well.

for the cake/para el pastel:

475 ml strong coffee/café fuerte
85 g cocoa powder/cacao en polvo
345 g all purpose flour/harina
10 g baking powder/royal
3 g salt/sal
225 g softened unsalted butter/mantequilla sin sal derretida
300 g dark brown sugar/azúcar moscavado oscuro
3 eggs/huevos
8 ml vanilla extract/vainilla

for the flan/para el flan:

1 can condensed milk/leche condensada
1 can evaporated milk/leche evaporada
5 eggs/huevos
1 tablespoon vanilla extract/cuchara de vainilla

caramel sauce from goat milk/cajeta

sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
tamiza la harina, royal y sal.

mix the cocoa powder with the hot coffee and let it cool down.

in a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together. beat in the eggs, one by one. stir in the vanilla extract.

grease and flour the baking pan. you can use any type of pan. spread cajeta on the bottom of the pan.

add part of the flour to the sugar mixure, then add part of the cocoa liquid. alternate flour and cocoa until you have none left. empty the batter in the baking pan.

for the flan part, mix well the eggs, both milks and vanilla extract.

carefully spoon the flan mixture of the chocolate batter. cover the baking pan with the aluminum foil and place it in a larger pan filled with water. bake it in a preheated oven for about an hour at 190°C.

leave it to cool down before serving.
dejalo enfriar antes de servir.

  12. Hi, this is such a beautiful cake! I've been admiring it ever since I saw it on foodgawker--I want to make it this weekend.

I was curious, what nation's cuisine does this belong to? I've never seen anything like this before!

    Thank you for sharing :)

    1. Did you mean that the flan part is Mexican, or have you seen Mexicans do a half flan, half cake like this?

  17. What a beautiful blog.I admire the time you put into every meal...You make me feel like such a lazy Mexican. I have a shortcut for this cake...let's just say the flan part is made 20 mins in the microwave. My grandmother used to make it in "bano Maria" ...huge pain in the you know what.
